Jackson, MS– Whether you hunt or just like guns, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves says this sales tax free weekend is for you.
Certain hunting gear and gun supplies will be tax free this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves says this sales tax free weekend has two meanings.
“People were going across state lines,” Lt. Reeves says “Border cities were having to compete with Louisiana’s sales tax holiday on hunting gear.”
Andy Anderson of Brandon says he would drive to Louisiana in the past to save during the sales.
“I’d drive a hundred miles or so, to Monroe,” Anderson says, “With the sales tax off you can buy boxes of ammunition.” This year he’s excited to save on gas and the sales tax by shopping locally.
Todd Sattore at Van’s Sporting Goods in Brandon says this is a huge business booster.
“We’re expecting it will be like Black Friday, so it will double our numbers for the month,” Sattore says.
This sales-tax holiday brings that business back into Mississippi, but it is also an awareness campaign.
“There’s an amendment on the ballot to make it a constitutional right to hunt,” says Lt. Reeves, “you’ll hear more of that closer to November.”
Though this is also known as the sales tax holiday for hunters, there are a few basics that aren’t covered. Binoculars, decoys, game calls, camo clothing and tree stands didn’t make the list of items that are tax free. You can see what items are tax free here.
