School shooter speculation in Amory continues rash of Mississippi school threats

Officials at multiple Amory schools, along with the Amory Police Department, are investigating a rumored impending active shooter attack. It makes the sixth threat of violence at a Mississippi school since Monday of this week.

In a Facebook post, the Amory Police Department made the public aware that they were investigating a potential attack, although no tangible threat had been made against any Amory School campus at this time.

“We believe the cause of this rumor is student speculation concerning an incident with a school district in a neighboring county,” a portion of the post reads. “However, we want to reassure parents and citizens of Amory that student safety is of the highest importance to us and we have taken steps to increase security around the schools for the time being.”

A similar threat was assessed at Betty Mae Jack Middle School in Morton on Tuesday based on a TikTok video referencing a potential shooting on or around the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Morton middle school was the third in the state to go on lockdown on Tuesday after a suspect was taken into custody for threatening Northwest Rankin Middle School in Flowood and another was arrested for an online threat direct at the Nanih Waiya Attendance Center on the same day.

Provine High School was also locked down on Monday, with a pair of intruders arrested. Earlier that day, a student at Thrasher Attendance Center in Booneville was apprehended for pulling a gun on a fellow student in the school bathroom.

The string of threats follows a 14-year-old opening fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Ga., last week, slaying two students and two teachers.
