UPDATE from Greenwood Public School District:
SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT
Shortly before 1 p. m. today (Monday), a Greenwood Public School District school bus transporting about three dozen GHS football players and three coaches was involved in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 82.
Eleven students and three coaches were treated at Greenwood Leflore Hospital for various bruises, sprains and other non life-threatening injuries. Six students were treated at Tyler Memorial Holmes Hospital in Winona and three students were treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada. One student was airlifted to a Tupelo hospital due to inclement weather at the time in Jackson. He has since been released.
Some students were transported by a ambulance while others were transported by private vehicle.
As of 6:30 p.m. all players and coaches have been released with no severe injuries and all are doing well.
We would like to thank the emergency personnel who responded to the scene of the accident; the medical and other hospital staff at each of the hospitals for their swift response and assistance; the parents and relatives who came to the scene and who, for the most part, remained calm in what we know was a very uncertain time for them; passersby who stopped to assist; and to all who offered prayers for these young men and their coaches.
Coach Gatewood would like to personally thank the parents, first responders, passersby and everyone who assisted and prayed for their safety.
