Authorities in north Mississippi are warning the public to beware of scammers posing as employees with the Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department.

The scammers are calling individuals and telling them they have a warrant out for their arrest. Those participating in the scam then tell the person on the other end of the phone that they will be arrested unless they pay money over the phone with a Green Dot card.

Green Dot is a prepaid debit card that can be used to make purchases, withdraw cash, and pay bills. The Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department reiterates that law enforcement officers will never ask for money, especially over the phone, and that fines are paid through the court system.

Anyone who receives a call from a scammer is urged to hang up immediately and call the police.
