GUNTOWN, Miss. – A Guntown Middle School teacher has been reprimanded after two students said she made a racist remark in an attempt to get them to be quiet. But parents say her punishment is not enough to satisfy them.
Dominique Witherspoon and Paris Howell said they were telling jokes in class when the teacher told them to be quiet before she sent their “colored selves” to the office.
The district’s superintendent said the teacher was reprimanded and has apologized to the girls and their parents. While the district would not make public exactly what reprimand the teacher received, the parents of Howell and Witherspoon said it was only a slap on the wrist. They are requesting she be fired and have contacted the NAACP. They plan to talk with a lawyer Tuesday.
