Grammy Museum Mississippi has announced Rosanne Cash as this year’s recipient of the Crossroads of American Music Award, which goes out annually to an artist who has made significant musical contributions inspired by not only Mississippi but the region as a whole.
Cash, who was born just over the state line in Memphis, Tenn., is the eldest daughter of the late Johnny Cash and has won four Grammy Awards since she began performing in 1978. Her Grammys include “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” in 1985 and “Best Americana Album” in 2014.
Some of Cash’s biggest hits include “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me,” “Seven Year Ache,” “This Train is Bound for Glory,” and “Tennessee Flat Top Box.” Outside the recording studio, she has written three books and edited a collection of short stories. Her fiction and essays have been printed by publications such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone.
“As one of the most profound singer-songwriters of her generation, and a best-selling author, Rosanne Cash has had an immeasurable impact on the history of American music,” Grammy Museum Mississippi executive director Emily Havens said. “We can’t wait to honor her incredible achievements with the sixth annual Crossroads of American Music Award at this year’s gala.”
Cash, technically classified as a country music artist but has successfully bounced genre lines throughout her 46-year career, has received other honors such as being inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015. However, she said the Crossroads of American Music Award is one that means a lot, considering the Mississippi Delta has played a vital role in her upbringing as an artist.
“I’m extremely honored and humbled,” Cash said. “I feel that so much of what I am, what I am drawn to, what I love, what I write about, and what is in my very bloodstream comes from the Delta.”
Cash will be honored with the award during Grammy Museum Mississippi’s 2024 Gala on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. Tickets to the event go on sale to members on Thursday, Aug. 22, and can be purchased here. Pending availability, tickets will become available to the general public on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Cash joins five other legends to receive the Crossroads of American Music Award: Charley Pride, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Rush, Marty Stuart, and Keb’ Mo’.
