A Democratic gubernatorial candidate is calling for a debate.
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith is calling on his opponents in the Democratic primary race to meet for a debate ahead of the August 6th primary election.
Two of the three Republican primary candidates debated at Mississippi State in early April, and Smith says that voters need to hear from the Democratic candidates as well.
“I think this election and the issues confronting Mississippi voters demand a similar exchange among Democratic candidates,” Smith said. “I would like to see the other eight candidates on the Democratic gubernatorial ballot share a debate stage. A location in Jackson, MS would make a lot of sense, but I am willing to debate Attorney General Jim Hood and the other candidates anytime, anywhere.”
Smith is running against party frontrunner Jim Hood and seven other candidates in the primary.
“Regarding a debate, we’ve not received any information and, therefore, have no comment at this time,” a spokesman from Hood’s campaign said.
Velesha Williams, another candidate in the race, has also called for a debate.
