Incumbent Republican Roger Wicker has defeated Democratic challenger Ty Pinkins for the lone U.S. Senate on Mississippi’s ballot this year.
Wicker first began serving on the Senate in 2007, with Tuesday’s win marking the fourth time Mississippi voters have elected the Pontotoc native to the seat in a general election.
The veteran congressman is currently the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, as well as a senior member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, among three other committee assignments.
If the U.S. Senate is turned majority Republican, Wicker will chair the Armed Services Committee as its ranking member – the first Mississippian to hold that position since the late John Stennis.
Pinkins challenged Wicker for the statewide congressional seat after going unopposed in the Democratic primary. The Rolling Fork native ran an active campaign, though lamented a lack of support from his national party and was overwhelmingly outspent by Wicker in the general election battle.
Pinkins, a Georgetown Law graduate and military veteran, was defeated by Michael Watson in the 2023 Mississippi Secretary of State election.
