CANTON, Miss.–Canton’s alderman meetings are sometimes known for being lively, with voices raised and wild gestures, but what happened Monday took a step further, and a News Mississippi affiliate reporter saw the whole thing.
Jerry Lousteau runs the morning news at WMGO and has been covering the board of alderman in Canton for about 20 years.
“I saw two aldermen in the hallway in an altercation,” he said. “No punches, but pushing and shoving that ended with Alderman Les Penn on the ground and Alderman Eric Gilky on top of him.”
He said the two had to be separated by the police chief and assistant chief and they both ended up at the police station, but no charges were filed.
Canton Mayor Arnel Bolden, who did not witness what happened, later told TV station WAPT that that kind of thing doesn’t happen at Canton meetings.
