JACKSON, Miss.–The 2013 Teacher Prep Review by the National Council on Teacher Quality came out this week and the reports aren’t so hot for Mississippi.
The report grades each university in the entire country and their education department in regards to how they’re preparing and training their future teachers for the classroom.
“Which programs in the U.S. are doing a great job, and which are not, when it comes to teacher training,” said NCTQ president Kate Walsh.
Walsh did point out that a good experience and good training could come out of programs that were rated low for certain people, but across the board their report uses 18 different pieces to grade universities.
“We want to give folks hard evidence that a program is going to give them the training they need,” she said.
Each program was rated on a star system from one through four stars, on half-star increments.
In the state of Mississippi, Delta State University by far and away scored the lowest, not getting a single star in their secondary and special education programs.
The highest rated programs each received two and a half stars and were: Mississippi University for Women elementary, University of Mississippi secondary, and Southern Mississippi’s secondary programs respectively.
