Rehiring Begins JSU’s Ambitious Upgrade to School of Journalism

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State University has named Dr. Elayne Hayes-Anthony Director of the school’s Department of Mass Communications.

Hayes-Anthony was previously employed as JSU’s Director of Graduate Studies and once led the department to which she’s returning, before she left over 20 years ago. “This is like a homecoming to me,” said Hayes-Anthony at a Friday press conference. “And I am going to do everything in my power to make sure that this is a premier program in mass communications for HBCU’s and majority universities.”

A former news anchor, Hayes-Anthony currently works for Belhaven University as Director of its Department of Mass Communications. “Right now I have a 95 percent rate in placing students in jobs, and I plan to bring that to Jackson State University,” she said.

Hayes-Anthony earned her master’s degree at JSU and her Ph.D. in Organizational Communication Broadcast Law at Southern Illinois, Carbondale.

“We are most pleased to welcome Dr. Hayes-Anthony back to the University to direct a program she helped to develop,” said JSU Provost Dr. James Renick.  “Finding a leader of her caliber is an important first step in the creation of a School of Journalism and Mass Communications.”

Hayes-Anthony will start full time at JSU in July. But until then, she will be at the campus once a week starting next week.
