A pair of running backs in Mississippi have been named to the watch list for a prestigious award ahead of the 2019 college football season.
Ole Miss’ Scottie Phillips and Mississippi State’s Kylin Hill have been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which has been presented to the nation’s college football player of the year since 1937.
Phillips scored 14 total TDs and fell just short of the 1,000-yard mark in 2018 while battling injuries in the latter stages of his first season with the Rebels after transferring from Jones County Junior College. The Ellisville native will now look to become a focal point of new OC Rich Rodriguez’s offense in 2019.
Hill was able to amass just over 730 yards last season while sharing the backfield with Aeris Williams and QB Nick Fitzgerald, who led the team in carries. Hill will likely be the team’s featured back in year two under head coach Joe Moorhead after flashing his ability in a limited role in 2018, including a 211 yard and 2 TD performance against Kansas State.
