VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Mississippi Court of Appeals has upheld the 10 year prison sentenced given a Vicksburg man for beating his ex-girlfriend.
Terris Stevenson, 42, was convicted of domestic violence in 2013. In his appeal, Stevenson unsuccessfully argued that prosecutors made improper statements during closing arguments. A majority of the judges, however, disagreed and they ruled that if Stevenson’s attorney had concerns about what was said, they should have objected at trial.
Prosecutors said Stevenson forced his ex-girlfriend to drive to an apartment, had her to undress, and then beat her with an extension cord. While waiting for trial, police said Stevenson also tried to convince the woman to drop her charges.
