WASHINGTON, D.C.–One of the first lines of defense for America is by sea. Now Mississippi has an even bigger influence on how our naval defenses are handled. Sen. Roger Wicker (R), in addition to a big list of committees and other duties, has been named chairman of the Senate Seapower Subcommittee.
He was chosen by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz).
“Mississippi has a proud tradition of supporting our Navy and Marine Corps. I look forward to continuing that tradition as Chairman of this subcommittee, as well as working with the department’s leadership,” said Wicker. “We face complex threats, and America should maintain its ability to project power around the globe, while upholding our obligations to our friends and allies. Our subcommittee’s duty is to provide the greatest value to the taxpayers while ensuring our sea services remain the best trained, best-equipped, and most professional maritime force in the world.”
The Subcommittee on Seapower is responsible for Navy and Marine Corps programs and procurement, maritime issues, and strategic lift programs for the Department of Defense.
Former Gov. Ray Mabus serves as Secretary of the Navy.
