JACKSON, Miss.- Phone calls to and from prisoners in Mississippi will be reduced by over half the cost.
The head of the Department of Mississippi’s prison system said that the per-minute cost will drop from 22 cents to 11 cents. Other fees included could be dropped or reduced.
The Federal Communications Commission set a cap per-minute for prison phone calls, debit and pre-paid. This ruling would be in conjunction with that.
However, this cut comes at a cost. It will reduce the expenses for inmates families, but it will also mean less revenue for the Inmate Welfare fund with provides supplies for education and recreational programs in prisons.
Last year phone calls cost roughly $1.4 million dollars.
