Mississippi’s Primary Runoff Election Day is here, with the August 29 ballot set to feature runoffs in 65 counties.
At this time, the Statewide Election Management System (SEMS) has reported a total of 12,897 absentee ballots requested, 12,604 absentee ballots sent, and 10,415 absentee ballots received in Mississippi for the primary runoff election.
The Secretary of State’s Office is reminding residents that the difference in the number of ballots requested and sent is because of continuous processing from county circuit clerks.
Secretary Michael Watson has issued the following reminders for voters planning on casting a ballot during the runoff elections:
- In-Person Absentee Voting Deadline: The last day to absentee vote in person was Saturday, August 26.
- Mail-In Absentee Voting Deadline: All mail-in absentee ballots must be postmarked by August 29 and received by county Circuit Clerk Offices by September 6 in order to count.
- Voter ID Affidavit Ballot Deadline: Voters who cast an affidavit ballot by reason of voter ID must present an acceptable form of photo ID to their Circuit Clerk’s Office by September 6.
- Polling Place Location: Visit the polling place locator on the My Election Day portal, or contact your county Circuit Clerk’s Office or local Election Commissioners to verify your polling place.
- Voter Photo ID: Voters are required to show photo identification at the polls. A voter without an acceptable form of photo identification is entitled to cast an affidavit ballot.
- Campaigning: It is unlawful to campaign for any candidate within 150 feet of any entrance to a polling place, unless on private property, or to cause any disturbance about the polling place, even if more than 150 feet away.
- Loitering: The polling places should be clear 30 feet from every entrance of all people except election officials, voters waiting to vote, or authorized poll watchers.
- Camera Phones: Voters are prohibited from taking pictures of their marked ballot.
The resolution board will begin processing absentee ballots at the opening of the polls on Election Day at 7:00 a.m. and county election officials will tabulate ballots at 7:00 p.m.
For questions regarding Primary Election Day, voters can contact the Secretary of State’s Elections Division at ElectionsAnswers@sos.ms.gov, call the Elections Hotline at (1-800) 829-6786, or visit YallVote.ms.
