JACKSON, Miss.- The job of the precinct manager is an important one, but the only problem is: you don’t fully appreciate them until they’re not there. Such is the case in Hancock County.
Republican voters were turned away from one specific precinct Tuesday morning when polls first opened. The Hancock County Circuit Clerk told WLOX that the Republican Party precinct manager had car troubles. She had all of the GOP ballots, and voting equipment.
The precinct manager’s job is important enough that a hiccup like this directly effects voter turnout, as the Republican voters who got up early to vote were told they had to come back later.
Something similar happened in Byram, WAPT reported that the Wynndale Baptist Church precinct didn’t open until after 7:30 a.m. Polls are supposed to be open from 7-7. One voter told the TV station that the precinct workers didn’t arrive until 6:50, and told them that it would be another 40 minutes before they would have the equipment set up.
For some people, this is the only time of day they have to vote, so this again has a direct impact on the voter turnout.
