JACKSON, Miss.–There were still no memorial arrangements for Officer Bruce Jacob, killed Saturday as he removed a barbeque grill that had fallen out into traffic on I-55 in Jackson.
Chief Lindsey Horton said in a Sunday press conference that Jacob died after he and his patrol car were hit by a car passing by as Jacob put the grill in the trunk of his cruiser.
“Another vehicle came and struck him as he was standing behind his car, and there was no evidence of skid marks, which would indicate to me and us that the individual may not have seen him until it was too late to react,” said Horton.
“He had his emergency lights on and motorists should know that they should move over or out of the way or at least slow down,” he said. “There is enough evidence to indicate that motorist did neither.”
No charges had been filed Monday against the driver, who was still in the hospital with injuries of his own from the crash.
Mississippi does have a law that requires you to move over one land for police cars and emergency vehicles, if it is possible to do so.
Jacob had been on the force for five years.
