A Richland police officer, who was involved in a fatal shooting that left an armed woman holding a Walmart employee hostage dead, has been cleared to return to work, city leaders concluded Tuesday night.
After 20 minutes of public discussion, the Richland Board of Aldermen voted to allow Coty Hamilton to return to work on modified duty.
Hamilton and other officers responded to a hostage situation at a local Walmart on Dec. 21. Around 5:45 p.m., 21-year-old Corlunda McGinister was shot and killed. McGinister was pleading to speak with a news anchor while she held on to one of the employees, a video of the situation showed.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation continues to look into the case. Upon return, Hamilton will start on desk duty before being moved back into the field.
