Police investigating death of woman found lying in ditch outside Monroe County home

Authorities in Monroe County are investigating the death of a woman found lying in a ditch.

Police report that dispatchers received a call on Sunday from a person on Hatley-Detroit Road near the Mississippi-Alabama state line. The unidentified male caller went to an unoccupied family home to check on his sister who had gone there with a friend on Saturday to clean up the yard.

Upon arrival, the man found his sister lying in a ditch in the home’s driveway. Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley identified the woman as 45-year-old Sherry Pope of Vernon, Ala. She had been deceased for several hours when discovered by her brother, according to the coroner.

At this time, the death is being investigated as suspicious and an autopsy will the conducted by the state medical examiner on Friday at the Biloxi lab. No arrests have been made at this time.
