Vicksburg police are investigating after two historic sites were vandalized with pro-Confederate expressions early Tuesday morning.

An individual with apparent nefarious motives is reported to have painted “Liars” on the side of the Vicksburg Civil War Museum on Washington Street and “Dixie Forever” on the Illinois Monument Mural near the Mississippi River.

Mayor George Flaggs confirmed to the Vicksburg Daily News that the graffiti has since been removed from the locations. He said that the mural, in particular, is coated with a special substance that protects it from graffiti as well as other elements such as sunlight and excess amounts of dirt.

“We called the artist and he told us exactly how to remove it without harming the painting,” Flaggs told the newspaper about the process of removing the wording from the mural.

Vicksburg Police Chief Mike Bryant also reported to the local news outlet that there is video footage of the incidents.

This is a developing story. More details will be provided when made available.
