Pearl woman sentenced for opioid ingestion while pregnant

Officials announced on Tuesday that a Pearl county woman will serve time after exposing her unborn baby to opioids during pregnancy. 29-year-old Nikki Cox-Musgrove was arrested in 2016 on suspicion of doctor shopping.

After her arrest, An investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics led to Musgrove being charged with five counts of obtaining Xanax by fraud and two counts of child abuse for ingesting opioids while pregnant, causing substantial harm to the child.

In a joint statement from MBN Director John Dowdy and Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest, they announced that Musgrove pled guilty to all charges.

“On Monday, Cox-Musgrove pled guilty to five counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and received a 25-year sentence, with 10 years suspended and 15 years to serve. She also pled guilty to two counts of child abuse and received a five-year sentence to run concurrent.”
