One person is dead following the severe weather that swept through Mississippi last Thursday.
Per a report from WLBT, the Rankin County coroner informed the TV station that Susan Collipp, 57, of Pearl, was standing outside of her home on Summerwood Drive when a tree fell on her. She is the first known death from the storms. Two people have been reported as injured in Rankin County as well.
According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, damaged homes have been reported in Hinds, Lowndes, and Rankin counties with additional assessments expected to be released soon. Thursday’s storms also took out power for over 64,000 homes and businesses, including at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant which supplies water to the capital city of Jackson.
Severe weather returned to Mississippi on Sunday evening and has continued into Monday. So far, severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings have come and gone in portions of south Mississippi with minimal damage being reported at this time. Flash flooding is likely through Tuesday in much of central Mississippi.
