As school safety continues to be a hot topic across the U.S., leaders in Mississippi are working to ensure every student is protected at their place of education.
The Mississippi Department of Education announced its annual Mississippi School Safety Summit for Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clyde Muse Center in Pearl. The summit, which is open to all educators and safety personnel, will be used to discuss the best ways to make schools safe for all.
Leading the conversation will be Max Schachter, a national school safety advocate. Schachter’s son, Alex, was one of 17 victims murdered in the Parkland, Florida school shooting on Valentine’s Day 2018. Following the incident, Schachter founded the organization called Safe Schools for Alex, which helps provide the most current and efficient safety practices to schools across the country.
The Rankin County School District will be presenting the event alongside the Mississippi Association of Secondary School Principals, Mississippi Department of Education, Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, Mississippi Association of School Administrators, Mississippi Association of School Superintendents, and Mississippi Professional Educators.
