NATCHEZ, Miss. — A Natchez woman has been arrested after investigators said she tried to throw her child into a garbage can.
Joanne Fleming, 18, was taken into custody Monday evening and charged with felony child abuse. Detectives said she walked out of a home screaming and carrying the 1 ½ month-old-baby; and attempted to place the child in a garbage can in the carport. Some of the woman’s relatives tried to take the child from her. An off-duty officer, who saw the struggle from his porch next door, was able to rescue the infant.
He held Fleming until other police arrived.
