After years of unsuccessful attempts at luring Target to open a location in Tupelo, the northeast Mississippi city may soon be the home of one of the mega retailer’s locations.

Target representatives made a trip to the Magnolia State to scope out a site on North Gloster Street as a possible location for a store in 2023, per a report from WTVA, The visit to Mississippi appears to be bearing fruit as Target has now filed paperwork with the city of Tupelo for potential construction on the site that was viewed.

The proposed Target store is set to sit in a commercial area of town near the Mall at Barnes Crossing as well as a myriad of restaurants and retailers. Per documents, Target’s Tupelo site will be just under 150,000 square feet.

According to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, the Tupelo Planning Committee will hold a public hearing on Sept. 30 about the rezoning of just over 113 acres of land — 23 of which are reportedly designed to host the Target store and its parking spaces.

While all signs point to the retail giant setting up shop in Tupelo, some hurdles still have to be cleared before the development comes to fruition. The city’s planning committee will have to get the site rezoned from an agriculture open property to a general commercial one. The plan is to present a site plan to the Tupelo City Council on October 1.

Target has celebrated the grand opening of 10 new locations in the past year and the company is on a mission to build 300 stores in the next decade. While there is no specific timeline for the possible construction of the proposed Target outlet in Tupelo, Mississippians can visit the retailer in D’Iberville, Flowood, Hattiesburg, Horn Lake, Jackson, and Olive Branch.

At the time of publication, Target had not responded to a request for comment from SuperTalk Mississippi News.
