The Oxford Police Department has two new school resource officers for this school year.
Officer Dukes is assigned to the Oxford Learning Center and Officer Beavers is assigned to Bramlett Elementary School.
Major Sheridan Maiden, with the Oxford Police Department, said he has been working there for twelve years and the department has had school resource officers since before he got there.
“We see it as a valuable resource to have within the schools,” said Major Maiden.
He said their curriculum and job description is written by the department, but there is a state law that determines what a school resource officer does in the school and they go by that.
He also gave tips on how to keeps kids safe while going to school. This applies for everyone, not just Oxford residents.
“We have a lot of kids, a lot of them are new to the school systems, and we ask that our drivers be careful and courteous when it comes to our bus stops as well as our school busses,” said Major Maiden. “Don’t pass a stopped school bus. When going through a school zone, obey all of the traffic laws, including speed, and look out for our kids as they’re walking to and from school.”
