OXFORD, Miss.- There were 48 middle school teams from across the country that competed Monday for the National Science Bowl Championship in Washington DC. Mississippi was represented by Oxford Middle School.
“The National Science Bowl challenges students to excel and heightens their interest in fields vital to America’s continued scientific advancement,” Energy Secretary Moniz said.
The National Science Bowl is a competition for thousands of middle school and high school students to compete in a fast pace question and answer format. They are asked questions about biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math. These are some of America’s brightest students.
Winners took home 1,000 dollars for their schools science departments and additional prizes went out to the first place teams. Created by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Bowl is one of the largest science competitions in the nation. It first began in 1991 and since then over 240,000 people have competed in it. It was created to spike interest for students to pursue careers involving math and science.
