Oxford Looking at City Sewage to Create Power, Alleviate Capacity

OXFORD, Miss.-The city of Oxford is looking at the possibility of using city sewage to alleviate some capacity at its water treatment plant and also create power.

On Tuesday the mayor signed a non-binding agreement to look into a partnership with Synergy-World Energy LLC and Langenburg Technologies LLC.

“The real benefit would be relieving or freeing up capacity at the waste water plant,” said Bart Robinson Director of Public Works.

The current plant in Oxford has capacity to treat 6.5 million gallons of sewage but if the city partnered with the companies it would alleviate the flow of some of that and free it up.

“That pushes back any upgrades that would need to be made to the plant,” said Robinson in reference to the high population growth Oxford has seen recently.

The two companies would then use the waste byproducts to create electricity that they would then sell back to TVA and onto the grid.

The city would pay the company for the amount of sewage they treated per day.
