JACKSON, Miss.–Even though the holiday enforcement period for New Year’s has been a short one, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said Thursday that by mid-afternoon they had already issued 1,129 tickets.
Lt. Johnny Poulos, spokesman for the Highway Patrol, said that included 47 DUI arrests, 41 seatbelt citations, and seven child restraint citations statewide.
A total of 33 traffic collisions were investigated with 14 injuries being reported.
One of those wrecks was south of Bay Springs, near the Jones County line, on Hwy. 15, and was deadly.
It was a two-vehicle crash that killed one person and sent another to the hospital about 2 a.m. Thursday. Names had not been released yet.
The holiday enforcement period, which is when troopers step up patrols and checkpoints and put extra officers on patrol, ended this morning at 12.
