One dead from west nile virus

The Mississippi Department of Health has reported a death from the West Nile Virus.

The virus took the life of a person in Humphreys County.

MDH has already reported 25 cases of the virus this year.

The 2016 total of West Nile Virus cases was  43, with one death recorded. The previous death recorded in Grenada has been discounted after further investigation.

The health department encourages people to take precautions against the mosquitos that carry the virus.

  • Use a mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient such as DEET while you are outdoors.
  • Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
  • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
