One person is dead after multiple tornadoes tore through Mississippi overnight. Ray Coleman, Director of External Affairs at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency confirmed the storm-related death which occurred in Monroe County and said that multiple other injuries have been reported there as well. MEMA is coordinating resources for county emergency management partners in response to the tornado outbreak.
“Both our state agency & non-governmental partners are currently staffing the State Emergency Operations Center to ensure we are fulfilling any unmet needs,” said a statement from MEMA. “As the day progresses, we will begin to receive initial damage reports from those affected counties. Those numbers are subject to change once we are able to conduct more detailed assessments.”
MEMA continued saying the overall safety of residents & first responders is the number one priority at this time.
“It was a difficult night for many Mississippians due to the severe storms,” said Governor Phil Bryant. “First responders have been working all night and into the morning. Crews will be back out today for damage assessment.”
In response to the deadly tornado in Monroe County, the City of Columbus’ emergency service resources have gone to assist the Hamilton community.
“The Department of Homeland Security activated our Columbus Fire and Rescue Department last night following a tornado hitting the Hamilton area. They were requested and dispatched just after midnight, said a statement from Columbus Mayor Robert Smith. “Our search and rescue teams are there now with ATVs, rescue equipment and our communication’s vehicle. I am grateful we are able to help our Hamilton neighbors and thankful for the professional personnel with Columbus Fire and Rescue; they are the best!
Smith went on to say that their hearts and prayers are with those affected by the storm. Our hearts and prayers are with those affected by the storm.
Vicksburg also saw some major damage with downed power lines, trees, and flooding affecting the area. Mayor George Flaggs updated everyone on the damage in Vicksburg during a press conference on Sunday afternoon.
“Elee and I are praying for everyone threatened by last night’s storms,” said Lt. Governor Tate Reeves in a statement on social media. “Grateful to the first responders helping everyone affected.”
