Cold weather won’t stop action on the diamond in Mississippi this weekend, but the frigid temperatures have caused two of the state’s college baseball programs to alter their schedules.
In Oxford, Ole Miss ace pitcher Hunter Elliott will take the mound at 2 p.m. for Friday’s opener of a three-game home series against Eastern Kentucky. Forecasts anticipate temperatures reaching a high of 39 degrees on Friday and lows in the mid-teens as the night approaches.
The remainder of the weekend will be played as scheduled with Saturday’s first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. and Sunday’s finale at noon. Per Ole Miss officials, ticket holders will use their current tickets for the rescheduled game time. New tickets will not be issued, and mobile tickets will update automatically to reflect the new game date.
Down in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss will hit the diamond two hours earlier than previously scheduled. The Golden Eagles will kickstart a three-game outing against Louisiana Tech at 4 p.m. Forecasts project highs near 50 degrees on Friday with lows reaching 22 degrees.
First pitch for the other two games of the series will stay the same with Saturday’s contest slated to start at 2 p.m., as part of the school’s Super Saturday celebration, with Sunday’s tilt beginning at 1 p.m.
Mississippi State has also announced a schedule change, with Friday’s series opener versus Missouri State being moved back to 2 p.m. Temperatures are forecast to reach highs in the low 40s and a low of 22 degrees. Saturday’s 2 p.m. first pitch and Sunday’s 1 p.m. start time remain in place as scheduled.
