Ole Miss linebackers coach Jon Sumrall has accepted a position at Kentucky, a source confirmed to SportsTalk Mississippi. Rebel Grove first reported the news.
Sumrall spent a year on Ole Miss’ staff and his work merited a tangible improvement in the Rebels’ linebacking play, which was the weakest link of a struggling defense in 2017. Sumrall previously spent three seasons on Neal Brown’s staff at Troy, working with linebackers and serving as special teams coordinator. Sumrall worked for three seasons at Tulane prior to Troy. Brown made a push to bring Sumrall on staff with him when Brown was hired at West Virginia in January, Sumrall ended up staying at Ole Miss.
Sumrall’s departure sends him back to his alma mater, where he played middle linebacker from 2002-2004.
Ole Miss added Tyrone Nix to its staff on Monday, who previously served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach under Houston Nutt in Oxford from 2008-2011.
