No. 4 Ole Miss defeated No. 22 Southern Miss 11-5 during a midweek game in Oxford Tuesday night.
The Rebels (11-2) dominated the first five innings, going into the top of the sixth with an 8-1 lead. That’s when the Golden Eagles (8-4) rallied on a Carson Paetow home run to cut the lead down to 8-5.
With their lead dwindling, the Ole Miss offense went back to work in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single from Anthony Calarco extended the lead to 9-5. Then, in the seventh, the Rebels added two more runs for insurance purposes.
At the plate for the Rebels, Peyton Chatagnier (4), T.J. McCants (3), and Calarco (2) all had homeruns while Jacob Gonzalez and Calvin Harris each pitched in two hits apiece. On the mound, Ole Miss starter J.T. Quinn (3-0) got the win. USM starter Colby Allen (0-1) was charged with the loss.
The Rebels have now won four in row, while the Golden Eagles move to 0-2 on the season against in-state rivals after falling to Mississippi State last week.
