“Ole Miss basketball isn’t going anywhere.”
The words of Rebel head coach Chris Beard following the team’s 73-70 loss to Michigan State in the program’s second-ever Sweet 16 could not ring more true than they do today. One day ago, however, those sentiments appeared to be potentially hollow as a major institution reportedly made a strong offer to poach the Ole Miss frontman.

On Tuesday afternoon, announcements flooded the sports world that Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams was jumping ship to occupy the head coaching vacancy at Maryland. Williams, a known nomad, had been a name reported to have interest in moving to the East Coast once rumors that Kevin Willard would be leaving the Terrapins to coach at Villanova surfaced.
Once Williams’ departure from College Station became a reality, one prime candidate arose to lead the Aggies to glory — Chris Beard. Basketball fans across the Southeast and abroad were glued to their electronic devices as moderators, those who claim to be connected to industry sources, and reporters began promulgating the notion that Texas A&M had a vested interest in hiring Beard.
Not only did the university with one of the largest athletics budgets in the nation have an interest in Beard, the school was also reportedly prepared to offer an alluring salary while devoting top-tier contributions to NIL and facilities improvements on campus. The annual compensation Texas A&M has reportedly offered Beard was said to be north of $7 million, while the financial commitment to acquiring the cream of the crop players was even greater.
Though a source connected to the Ole Miss program told SuperTalk Mississippi News that Beard’s priority was to stay put in Oxford, the deal from the Aggies looked to be too good to turn down. That would have been the case if Ole Miss did not have an athletics director by the name of Keith Carter, a former Rebel basketball player, and if fan buy-in via the Grove Collective didn’t happen to be at an all-time high.
No stranger to other programs eyeing coaches of various Rebel sports, Carter has proven to be successful in retaining talent. It was not long ago that Auburn pursued Ole Miss head football coach Lane Kiffin, but to no avail. Last year, Arkansas reportedly took a stab at acquiring Beard — an effort that proved fruitless. Even this year, ahead of the Texas A&M reports, there were talks of Beard possibly being courted by Indiana.
Nonetheless, the head coach remained at Ole Miss, a program Beard said he took over to win national championships. Why? Why would a Texas native elect to stay in Mississippi when a lucrative offer to return to his home state is on the table? Because Keith Carter understands how the game is played in the modern world of college athletics. And he plays it better than anybody at his position.
Texas A&M’s offer, albeit one to earn Beard a top-five salary in the sport, was reportedly countered by Ole Miss. According to a source, the Rebels made plans to extend the basketball coach’s contract and devote a heaping sum of money to player acquisition. The exact figures are not currently available, but we do know that making a strong financial commitment to football and basketball has been Carter’s mantra as the Ole Miss athletics director.
Beard is reported to have turned down the offer by Texas A&M while informing Ole Miss that he will remain put, meaning Carter won yet another battle against a fellow collegiate institution window shopping Rebel coaches.

“I’m just super appreciative of our players raising the expectations for themselves and our program,” Beard also said after the Sweet 16 loss. “Now our fans feel it, our students feel it, our town feels it.”
The expectations in Oxford are certainly higher than they’ve ever been. In his two years at Ole Miss, Beard has compiled a 44-24 overall record and has taken the team as far as it’s ever gone in the NCAA Tournament. With a guaranteed year three of the Beard era, Ole Miss is expected to be an even stronger force.
Last week, the transfer portal opened up, and to nobody’s surprise, the Rebels are in on some of the top prospects seeking a new collegiate home. Come November, Ole Miss is anticipated to field one of the most talented rosters assembled in program history.
