Ole Miss backup quarterback Spencer Sanders will not be eligible for the Peach Bowl, as revealed on Monday night’s episode of Rebel Yell Hotline.
Sanders transferred to Oxford before this season with the hopes of beating out Jaxson Dart for the starting position. After a preseason battle that lasted all the way until the Rebels’ opening game against Mercer, Sanders ultimately lost the competition as Dart went into his second year as Lane Kiffin’s starting quarterback.
Sanders, who was the No. 15 transfer quarterback in last year’s class, spent the 2023 season as a safeguard when needed. With four years of starting experience from his time at Oklahoma State, Sanders was widely deemed one of the best backups in the nation.
When Sanders did have to come in, Kiffin’s high-powered attack rarely skipped a beat with the veteran behind center. In seven appearances, Sanders threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns with a 65.5% completion rate. Dangerous with his feet, too, he added 45 rushing yards on 11 carries.
Sanders, who is ineligible for the postseason due to a lackluster academic performance, will more than likely turn his attention to the professional level. In five collegiate seasons, he totaled 11,832 yards, 88 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions.
As for Ole Miss’ quarterback situation, Dart is expected to be healthy and ready to go for the team’s first New Year’s Six appearance since 2021 as LSU transfer Walker Howard will move up to second string. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 30.
