Law enforcement authorities are warning Mississippians about scammers in the 25 counties impacted by storms and tornadoes that pillaged the state two weekends ago.
Officials have been notified of bad actors going door-to-door in impacted areas, fraudulently offering the services of a contractor or insurance adjuster who would assist in recovery efforts. Authorities remind the public that legitimate contractors and adjusters are licensed and must obtain a proper permit before serving Mississippians.

To ensure a contractor is authorized to operate in Mississippi, individuals in need of assistance are urged to:
- Ask for identification and verify licenses
- Don’t pay up front
- Don’t be pressured into signing anything
- Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement or city hall
In the meantime, restoration efforts are ongoing. For those looking to help their neighbors in need, a guide on how to do so can be found here.
