SUMMIT, Miss.- A Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave with pay after shooting a mentally ill man carrying what appeared to be a gun.
The Enterprise Journal reports the man’s mother said her son was holding a fake, plastic gun.
Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said deputies were investigating a disturbance call between Vincent Jones and his mother, Maria Jones. Rushing said Vincent Jones threatened both the family and the officers with a firearm.
That’s when the deputy shot Vincent Jones in the leg. Family members say he is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic.
Vincent Jones could face charges. An investigation is ongoing into the April 14 shooting.
