In the early morning hours of Sunday in Meridian an officer involved shooting left one person dead.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler confirmed that the suspect, a black man around age 35 was shot and died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
The gunfight began after officers were called to keep-an-eye-out for a man driving around with a gun and woman in the passenger seat. At first the woman’s boyfriend was in the car until a fight broke out between the two men and the boyfriend was thrown out.
When officers caught up to the vehicle they tried to coax the suspect out, however it was unsuccessful and shots began to be fired.
One officer was shot and taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. They are currently on administrative leave as the MBI investigates.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
