Educators in the Mississippi Pine Belt have found a creative way to help students engage with nature and a good book.
A social media post from the Oak Grove Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) showed students enjoying a book while lying in hammocks set up on wooden posts outside the school.
What school staff are calling the “Hammock Garden” was ultimately inspired by an idea by librarian Haley Ladner.
The hammock garden project was created in 2023 by the school’s PTO, along with donations from a family. The hammocks were installed near the library to give pupils access to the comfortable and relaxing form of outdoor learning.
