Northeast Mississippi Community College basketball’s head man Cord Wright has been named one of 60 coaches nationwide to be an instructor during the 2024 NCAA College Basketball Academy at Winthrop University.
The group of coaches is tabbed from NCAA Divisions II and II, NAIA, two-year college, and high school levels. Wright is the only coach from the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) to earn the honor.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of all of it,” Wright said. “Not only is it a networking situation for me to meet other guys from across the country, but there will be some sessions for coaches to learn from guys that have already been there and done that.”
The NCAA College Basketball Academy’s men’s event was established in partnership with the National Association of Basketball Coaches as a developmental showcase for some of America’s top prep and junior college athletes. The academy combines on-court competition with life skills instruction and runs from July 23-25.
Wright’s offseason recognition, which includes MACCC Coach of the Year honors follows a banner year in Booneville. The Tigers notched a 27-5 record and won their second MACCC championship in the last four seasons and reached the regional tournament semifinals. It was the most wins in a campaign since the 1999-2000 season.
The 11th-year bench boss will have a chance to coach one of his current players, with JUCO All-American Tyler Byrd among the participants.
