The North Mississippi Surgery Center (NMSC), an independent facility that partners with both North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) and local surgeons, has been named one of the nation’s “Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers for Ophthalmology” by U.S. News & World Report. The prestigious recognition places it among the top 16% of more than 4,300 medical facilities nationwide.
In terms of excellence in orthopedic surgery, the Orthopaedic Institute of North Mississippi (OINMS) played a pivotal role in this achievement, led by a team of highly skilled surgeons:

- Dr. Bryan Fagan
- Dr. Eric Lewis
- Dr. William Pillow
- Dr. Gabe Rulewicz
- Dr. Stephen Southworth
“This recognition is a direct reflection of the expertise and dedication of our surgeons and our surgical staff partners,” said Eric Lewis, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at OINMS and board member at NMMC. “We take immense pride in ensuring our patients receive the highest quality orthopedic care right here in our community.”
The OINMS was also recognized as the “Best Medical Clinic” and “Best Orthopedic Clinic” in the 2024 Daily Journal Readers’ Choice Awards. The surgery center earned national recognition for its “high procedural volume, low complication rates, and superior patient outcomes.”
Amid the recognition of Mississippi’s 12 ambulatory surgical centers providing orthopedic surgery, only four made the U.S. News & World Report list – North Mississippi Surgery Center being the only one north of Jackson to receive the distinction. The center was also honored as a top ambulatory surgical center for ophthalmology, recognizing the facility’s expertise in advanced eye procedures, including cataract surgery.
“The strength of our partnership with OINMS and our other expert surgeons, combined with our shared commitment to patient-first care, sets North Mississippi Surgery Center apart,” said David Wilson, president of NMMC-Tupelo and chief operating officer for North Mississippi Health Services. “Our collaboration ensures that patients receive top-tier surgical care from physicians who live and work in the communities they serve. This is the kind of nuanced, locally attuned excellence that outsiders simply can’t replicate.”
