Ole Miss will begin its 2023 football season in just four days and head coach Lane Kiffin has yet to name a starting quarterback.

Throughout the spring and fall, returning junior Jaxson Dart and Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders have battled it out to see who will be the Rebels’ primary signal caller when the team takes the field on Saturday.

Last season, Dart, who started for Ole Miss in 12 of the team’s 13 games, threw for 2,974 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 614 yards and one touchdown. Dart had a total quarterback ranking of 72.9.

Sanders, a four-year starter with the Cowboys, finished the 2022 season with 2,642 yards in the air, 17 passing touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback also posted 391 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He finished the season with a 71.1 quarterback rating.

Both quarterbacks had their fair share of good and bad moments in fall camp, though some have attributed many of the bad moments to the rejuvenated Ole Miss secondary led by first-year defensive coordinator Pete Golding.

While Kiffin has yet to make an official announcement, sources tell SuperTalk Mississippi News that Dart will take the first snaps of Saturday’s game.

Ole Miss begins its 2023 campaign against Mercer, who defeated West Alabama 17-7 last Saturday. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. CT and can be watched on ESPN+ or streamed on participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations.
