KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Attala County West District Justice Court Judge Ronnie Stewart will no longer perform marriages.
Stewart informed the Board of Supervisors in a letter Monday.
“After much consideration, as of July 13, 2015, I, Ronald Stewart, Justice Court Judge of Attala County, will no longer perform marriages.”
Stewart went on to say that “Pursuant to law, a Justice Court Judge may, (not shall) perform weddings.”
Stewart asked that his letter be put into the minutes at Monday’s board meeting.
Earlier this month, two Justice Court Judges in Yazoo County also announced their intentions to no longer perform marriages. It was reported that those judges made the decision in response to the US Supreme Court ruling that legalized same sex marriage, however Stewart’s letter to the board gave no mention as to the reasoning behind his decision to stop performing marriages.
Breezynews’ attempts to contact Stewart were unsuccessful.
