JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Highway Patrol Christmas Holiday Enforcement Period ended Midnight Thursday with no traffic related deaths reported in the state.
“We attribute this to the responsible decisions made by motorists traveling the roadways, public notification by the media, and the high visibility of law enforcement throughout the period,” said Lt. John Polous, a spokesperson for the MHP. “It also shows that a fatality free holiday period is possible when everyone works together to ensure safe travel for all.”
But there was work to do. Troopers did investigate 148 accidents. Out of those, 33 injuries were reported. Throughout the period, there were 22 DUI arrests and 1,500 citations were issued, including 30 for seatbelt violations.
