Basketball is on fire in Oxford and baseball will soon occupy the weekends of Ole Miss faithful, but another Rebel sport is red-hot right now and worthy of recognition. The No. 1 Ole Miss men’s golf team is continuing its hot streak with the latest accolade being its third top-two tournament finish this season.
Ole Miss, after shooting -33 as a team, finished behind Purdue in the Puerto Rico Classic. The Boilermakers had a -39 finish. Cohen Trolio led the Rebels throughout the event as he set a new career-low 54-hole score of 205. Trolio shot 11-under for the tournament, finishing No. 5 overall. He began the week with two rounds of 66 and capped off the tournament with 15 birdies.
Three other Rebels finished inside the tournament’s top 25 scorers. Michael La Sasso notched a score of -7, 209, securing his fifth top-15 finish of the year. Kye Meeks had the low round on Wednesday for Ole Miss, carding a -3. Meeks finished tied for No. 16 with a score of -6, 210. Cameron Tankersley battled on day three in Rio Grande, finishing tied for No. 22.
Cohen Trolio’s brother, Collins, and Tom Fischer wrapped up play shooting over par for the week. Collins, who is competing in his fourth tournament as an individual for Ole Miss this season, carded back-to-back rounds of -1 to finish the tournament at +1 overall. Fischer ended the week with momentum after a final round of -2. Fischer tallied five birdies on the afternoon.
Ole Miss returns to action March 2-4 at the Cabo Collegiate. Twin Dolphin Club will be the site of the tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico, and the Rebels’ chances are strong as the team has finished second or better in every event this year.
