CHUNKY, MISS– A hayride pulling a group of 10 was struck by a pickup truck in Chunky on Monday night, killing three.
UPDATE 11:30 a.m. – A written statement from Marshall West of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety was released:
“On Monday, October 31, 2016 at approximately 07:45 p.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a two vehicle crash on Highway 80 west of Chunky, Mississippi in Newton County. A Ford F-150 collided into the rear of a small utility trailer being towed by a Jeep Wrangler as both vehicles were traveling westbound on Highway 80. Ten occupants were on the trailer at the time of the collision. Three occupants on the trailer, Kristina Shaver a 33 year old female, Baylie Shaver an 8 year old female, and Brooke Shaver a 2 year old female were killed. All three were from Chunky, MS. The seven remaining occupants on the trailer were transported to hospitals in Meridian and Jackson. Their injuries are listed as life threatening and remain in critical condition. The driver of the Jeep, Terry Smith, a 58 year old male from Chunky was not injured. The driver of the Ford F150, Chase Cook, a 20 year old male from Decatur, MS was not injured. The accident remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.”

Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker told News Mississippi the hayride was on a highway when the accident happened.
“A Jeep (was) pulling a trailer with kids and adults on it, then they were rear-ended from behind,” Shoemaker said.
There were 10 people on the trailer. None left unscathed.
“Three were taken to Meridian to two hospitals there, four were airlifted to University (in Jackson),” said Shoemaker.
Three people were killed.
“One adult and two children,” Shoemaker said.
The details of this crash have yet to be released, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating this accident. News Mississippi will update as more details emerge.
