JACKSON, Miss. – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich closed off the Governor’s energy summit Thursday with words of encouragement for to Mississippi.
“You have a chance to be a remarkable leader in the country in the next 10 to 20 years,” said Gingrich.
Gingrich believes that Mississippi Power’s Kemper County coal plant may be the most important single experiment in developing electricity in the world today. When construction is finished, the plant is supposed capture carbon dioxide from burning coal, and which will be burned for fuel. It is expected to be both energy efficient and reduce C02 emissions.
“In the United States we have trillions of dollars’ worth of coal. Literally Trillions. Worldwide, huge deposits.”
So far the Kemper Plant has racked up a price tag of about $5 billion dollars and is more than $2 billion dollars over budget.
