- A bill that would limit the powers of Mississippi’s Attorney General has been squashed in Senate committee. It would apply to the filing of lawsuits seeking awards of at least a quarter million dollars and require the AG to get permission from a 3-member board consisting of the Governor, Lt. Governor and Secretary of State.
- After drugs were found inside the patrol car of Hinds county officer Larry Taylor this week, Taylor has been fired, and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Taylor was an officer in what’s called an interdiction unit that deals with interstate crime. Drug busts make up a large portion of those crimes.
- The tally is in. 55 people were detained in this week’s sweep of area restaurants by the office of Immigration and customs enforcement. Warrants executed at China Buffet and Ichiban restaurants in Central MS resulted in temporary closures on Wednesday. Most of the eateries are expected to be open this weekend.
- The critics are already griping about the anticipated Nintendo Switch, with news that the Switch will not have a Virtual Console at launch, and is not compatible with wireless Bluetooth headsets. Nintendo is expected to address these concerns with a public statement later today.
- The Ducks have it. After eight years with the MS department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks (including the interim director gig), Ed Penny is leaving to take a plum position with Ducks Unlimited. The MSU alumni will direct public policy for DU from Virginia to New Mexico.
- With Fat Tuesday just days away, you can hit the coast for all-day Mardi Gras fun tomorrow. Start at noon with the parade in Diamondhead. Pascagoula’s parade at 1PM. The Krewe of Gemini Carnival queues up at 2PM in Gulfport. And you can jump start the night time festivities with the parade in downtown Biloxi that kicks of at 5:30.
